Marine Lance CPL Jonathan E. Gadsden, 21, of Charleston/Jamestown, SC, died October 22, 2004, at the James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, FL.
Gadsden was being treated at Haley due to wounds caused by a roadside bomb on August 21, 2004, in Anbar Province, Iraq. While at Haley, Gadsden died unexpectedly of bacterial meningitis that was undiagnosed. He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA.
Gadsden joined the Marines in 2002, weeks after graduating from high school. While in high school he was a member of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.
