Army Captain Joshua T. Byers, 29, a native of Anderson, SC, died on July 23, 2003, east of Baghdad, Iraq. 

Byers was killed when his convoy was hit by an explosive device.  He was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, in Fort Carson, CO.  

Byers relocated to Sparks, Nevada with his family in 1989, where he graduated from Reed High School.  Then he attended West Point, graduating in 1996.
